Mitochondria
This is the “energy” organelle. It is involved in aerobic respiration and releases ENERGY
All cells have mitochondria, but cells that are more active have more than others (eg/ muscle cells.)
The structure of mitochondria consists of a double membrane.
The outer membrane is smooth.
The inner membrane contains many folds called cristae, which surround the inner space filled with fluid called the matrix.
The many folds contain protein (enzymes) that assist in respiration. The folds increase the surface area.
